Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman Abraham Roman, was the 3rd child of the family. When she was a young girl, Roman's carnival-barker father died in a tragic way, which made her mother Mary Pauline (Gold) to work as cleaner or waitress to help them survive. Ruth was a student at the school located in Boston's tenement region, which was the most deplorable. But she only stayed in school for two years before going on to pursue an acting profession. The path was difficult to pursue. Although she got an opportunity in New York posing as a writer for a mystery publication but no theater jobs came her way. Then, she worked as the hat checker in the nightclub before calling her quits and relocating to Boston. In Boston, she worked to make enough money as an usherette in the morning, while working at night with the New England Repertory Company, the first job she had that was steady. She was a drama student in The Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
