While we move through the summer of 2021 there is some uncertainty regarding what Rotary will continue to provide the human connections that Rotary members valued in the past. While the adage of 'hands in face space' will undoubtedly be part of our ongoing routine it is apparent that confidence is building and connections between face-to-face are being made. The Rotary organization has evolved. It is not without a degree of uncertainty that will continue to grow as we progress into summer 2021. It remains to be seen how the personal connections Rotary members cherished in the past will continue. Although the "hands facing space" idea is likely to become part of daily routines in the club it is clear that the feeling of security is growing and more members are making face-to faces connections. Rotary has also changed. Rotary's networks create friendships that last. The outbreak of the pandemic was the catalyst for us to take on technology. Our practices have been refined to ensure that we have online meetings within our businesses, while reintroducing social and service activities through an in-person format. To build a better future for Rotary We have seized opportunities created by the epidemic and our previous practices. A recent Rotary survey, we were encouraged to find that 75% of clubs have started making plans for their "business regular initiatives" The summer months have seen many members out and about focussing on various projects like river and beach cleans litter cleaning, and the ongoing service to society from Rotary volunteer teams giving their time to support COVID vaccination and test centres. Amanda Watkin - General Secretary's column - Rotary Magazine In a recent Rotary survey it was heartening to discover that about 75% of clubs have started planning for the same 'business as usual' events and initiatives which have helped communities throughout the countries in Great Britain and Ireland. I'm equally pleased that our Rotary Support Centre team continues to offer valuable tools which help to promote these projects as well as ensure that the infrastructure is maintained to keep members and the public safe; compliance and insurance are important We know that volunteering via the community of Rotary creates lasting friendships built upon the experience shared of volunteering time to serve the community benefits. The members' imagination and creative thinking when it comes to dealing with some of life's toughest challenges is astonishing. I am grateful for the opportunities Rotary offered me in 2002 to become a member. As with many others, Rotary have provided me with a strong trustworthy network of likeminded people from which genuine friendships have developed over these almost 20 years. Invite your family, friends and colleagues to join the incredible Rotary network.
